Walk The Hertfordshire Way

This long distance walk is open to all Hertfordshire U3A members who are capable of distance walking at a reasonable pace. It will be led by Charles Morris of Potters Bar U3A who recently organised and led a group along the London Loop walk. The 194-mile trail covers a large part of this beautiful, populous and rich county and will be walked in 16 monthly stages. Each walk is between 10.9 and 13.6 miles, except for one which is 15 miles. This last one can be split into two walks of 9 miles each.

The walks will take place on the 1st Thursday of the month starting in April 2018. The 2nd Thursday of the month will be a reserve if for any reason it is necessary to postpone. All walks start from a public transport point except for the end of Leg 1/start of Leg 2, at a village called Wallington, and the end of Leg 2/start of Leg 3, at Willian, 1.5 miles from Letchworth Garden City. The use of private hire for these points is being looked into. We will meet at 11.00 am to set off shortly after. We will stop for a packed lunch on route.

The walks are all well described in a book called ‘The Hertfordshire Way’ edited by Bert Richardson and Ian Hirst at a price of £11.50 available from The Friends of The Hertfordshire Way. Please see their website for the address. ISBN 978-1901037241. I would recommend anyone joining us for these walks to buy a copy. To register please contact Charles Morris by email at charlesmorris88@hotmail.com or text to 07788 887863

Walking Football at Harvesters FC

Walking football has nothing to do with walking! It's essentially 5 a side football played at a walking pace - running is penalised. It was invented in 2012 by Bury FC as a fun way to get older people back into football and, more importantly, taking exercise. It is growing in popularity throughout the country: even Barclays Bank has featured it in a TV ad campaign!
Sessions start with some gentle stretching and practice before playing for as long as stamina allows. The game is played on a hard surface so the recommended kit is tracksuit bottoms and trainers. It would also be useful if you could acquire or borrow a football (condition unimportant - second hand / used) for practice. For more information visit Harvesters Walking Football
